Basic Steps for Filing for VA Disability:
1
Intent to File
If you are considering filing for VA disability, this form sets a potential start date (the earlier the better).
3
Veteran Services Officer (VSO)
Find a VSO in your area--FREE assistance to veterans and family members for anything VA-related, ESPECIALLY for filing disablity claims (and/or appealing a decision). Many states offer VSO/VSR services through their state's veterans site. See the State Benefits Table here and click on your state to be directed to your state's Department of Veterans Affairs.
4
File a Disability Claim
Complete the Separation Health Assessment and the BDD (Benefits Delivery at Discharge) Claim (current Active Duty with more than 90 days remaining), or Fully Developed Claim (current Active Duty with less than 90 days remaining, retirees, and veterans).
5
Attend C&P Exam(s)
When you attend Compensation and Pension (C&P) medical exams, the provider may fill out Document Based Questionaires (DBQ's) to help support your claims for disability benefits. There are several available that cover topics such as cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, mental health, etc., and many veterans find it helpful to review the DBQ's before their exams.
